Paula Abdul has apparently gone ahead and told Us Weekly that she wasn’t drunk on TV. In fact, she goes one better:
“I’ve never been drunk. I have never done recreational drugs. Just look at my 20-year career. Tell me someone who is into partying and or doing drugs that could have done that.”
Yeah, Paula. First of all… People who’re into partying and/or doing drugs having 20-year careers? Well, let’s see, shall we? James Brown. Lou Reed. Billie Holiday. Elton John. Mick Jagger. David Bowie. Miles Davis. Bob Marley. John Lennon. Jimi Hendrix. I’m just coming up with names off the top of my head here. It’s easy! Hell — Elvis goddamn Presley and Johnny fuckin’ Cash. Y’know — people who’ve actually managed to sustain consistently popular careers without whoring themselves to inane reality TV shows.
Yeah, she was clearly completely sober in that one.
Now, I don’t really give two shits about Paula Abdul, or American Idol, or whether she’s a teetotaler or a complete lush, but I admit that the level of bullshit’s the woman’s spouting annoys the hell out of me. It’s not so much that she lies in itself that pisses me off; it’s that combined with her rampant ego and holier-than-thou “only bad and unsuccessful people use drugs and I’m very successful so that proves I’m clean” crap that gets my goat.
At least some people who went and got themselves good and fucked up had the decency to produce something worthwhile while they were at it.
