naughty little boys

So, apparently the British troops stationed in Iraq got their jollies ganging up on unarmed teenagers a couple of years ago. These soldiers dragged in a bunch of civilians and beat the shit out of them. They were also idiotic enough to get evidence of their crimes on video, which goes to prove that your average criminal — with the “war” prefix or otherwise — tends to be a fairly dumb motherfucker.

It’s not a particularly pretty video to begin with, what with the four kids getting their unarmed asses handed to them by the big guys in combat gear, but it’s made that much worse by the guy who’s shooting the whole thing, apparently from a nearby rooftop, and egging his mates on. The disgusting moral cripple sounds like he’s about to come in his pants, the way he’s hooting and hollering and giggling. (In a bizarre move, the video is censored — you can see the violence clearly enough, but the swearing is bleeped out. Because, y’know, that might be offensive.) What there is online at the News of the World site is apparently not all of it, either; there’s reportedly also a sequence where the lads proudly display an Iraqi corpse and kick it in the face. Classy.

I dunno, back when Lynndie England, the queen of combat-trained trailer trash, and her playmates were busy torturing Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib — all in the name of freedom and democracy, I’m sure — the United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld felt the need to point out that he wasn’t sure anyone had been tortured so much as they had been abused, which he believed was “technically different from torture”. Fair enough, Donald, you got us there.

So, we know these things happen; it’s just that most of the time, the proof doesn’t exist or doesn’t surface. When it does, we see something like this. And just the same, I have no doubt that a lot of people are still going to pretend that these are all isolated incidents and that on the whole, it’s a very nice and friendly and most importantly, a necessary little war, and anyway the people mistreated here have it coming and anyone who says otherwise is a terrorist sympathizer.

And sure, these incidents get people angry, but that doesn’t seem to accomplish a whole lot. We get angry, and yet most of us happily ignore the fact that the weapons of mass destruction that were the reason for this war don’t actually exist. You’d think that as far as lies go, that one’s a whopper, particularly considering how much the war has cost and continues to cost in lives and resources. I dunno; I guess Bill Clinton getting a blowjob in the Oval Office was solid grounds for an impeachment trial, but a little thing like telling a lie that results in a bunch of dirty ragheads who have the audacity to sit on all that oil getting fragged isn’t important enough to give anyone with the proper authority the stones to do anything about it.

  1. You’re really an excellent writer and given the topic here, I don’t think I’d characterize this as a rant so much as intelligent commentary. LOL

I can’t help wondering if you’re a native English speaker or perhaps learned the language from a native English speaking parent? Your prose is excellent as I said before, if you’d be interested in the non-fiction part of Hungry Writers (essay, editorial, and the like) I’m sure we’d be more than pleased to admit you. Thanks for this. Very good read.

  3. No, I’m not a native English speaker, and neither are my parents. Honestly? The absolute core of my English comes from reading massive amounts of comic books as a kid. Sure, I’ve picked up a thing or two since those days, but that’s where it springs from.
